A few words about us.......

Kouroupis was opened by the current owner, Manolis Anastasakis, in 1997, when Koutouloufari was not as well known as it is today, Manolis’ objective is to stock different and unusual gifts, souvenirs and jewellery for visitors in search of something out of the ordinary to take home. In particular he wanted to promote Crete and Cretan artists. At the same time he wanted to provide relaxing surroundings with no ‘hard sell’ and to avoid a ‘supermarket’ feel to the shop,
where shelves are stacked with dozens of identical items.

Today, 12 years on, Kouroupis has an enviable reputation and many visitors, who return to Crete every year, drop by to see Manolis, and to see what is new this year.
Manolis is a true Cretan, born on the island, he comes from the village of Gergeri, which is noted for it’s fine spring water (bottled under the Rouvas brand),and makes frequent trips to his village to assist the family with the grapes and olives. He has travelled widely in Europe, and speaks Spanish and English, he has one son and also a dog called Scarlet who is frequently found in the shop lying in the middle of the floor like dogs do!
In his quest to promote Cretan products he opened Agali a traditional kafenion, in 2007, serving various foodstuffs from his home village, and traditional Cretan food.
Manolis is also closely involved with the Cretan branch of the Barcelona Football Club Supporters Club and is currently taking Karate classes, he is also a keen musician and plays the mandolin.
