Authentic Greek sculpture, ceramics, glass, gifts, souvenirs, and jewellery, from Crete and Greece
Sofia Apostolaki lives and works in Xania at the western end of Crete. Using bright blue and warm earth tones her ceramic plaques are strongly influenced by Byzantine art.
Her townscapes utilise the perspective found in maps of the period many reproductions of which can be seen in the ‘Museum of Crete’ in Heraklion. Equally well known are her plaques featuring female faces and again her style, particularly when it comes to the eyes, hark back to the Byzantine and Fagum styles.
On this page are some samples of her extensive works using a flat ceramic ‘plate’ she incises a pattern on to the clay, and then paints in the detail. The whole is then fired so that the colours do not fade and the plaque is then mounted into a wooden frame. Some plaques have a surround which is designed to look like wood and do not have the wooden frame or backing.
