Ships and more about Sklavenitis

In Greece as in other civilisations, bronze was much in use before iron as it was more easily worked, needing lower temperatures than iron. Of course, sadly, much of the bronze produced was used for making weapons and it was only later that it came to be used for decorative purposes. On Crete bronze production is believed to have started from about 3000BC, along with work in silver and gold, the techniques probably came to Crete with traders from the East.

On this and the following pages you will find Sklavenitis unique forms of Greek god and goddesses these are available in our on-line store and you can view larger pictures and order by clicking on the thumbnails.

A biography and more information about Sklavenitis can be found on the ‘Ships’ page.

Fittingly we start our display with Zeus, the leader of the Gods. Zeus of course, was born here on Crete, high up on the Lassithi Plateau, in the Dikteon Cave. Sklavenitis has applied his usual flare to this sculpture and each one carries a lightning bolt ready to hurl at wrongdoers!

On the right we have Poseidon, God of the Sea and protector of Travellers and Seamen. Rather appropriate for Crete as an island and a tourist destination

Dionysos, far left, is usually represented as the God of Wine, although his origins are unclear. He represents also the inspirer of ritual madness and ecstasy, about which we ill not say too much here.

"This is the effect of your wine—for wine is a crazy thing. It sets the wisest man singing and giggling like a girl; it lures him on to dance and it makes him blurt out what were better left unsaid." Homer - The Odyssey

Another passion dear to Cretan hearts, music, which is represented here by Apollo, God of Music and Poetry . He was leader of The Muses and associated with Oracle notable at Delphi.
We know now that ancient Greece was not a peaceful place, and so we have to include Ares, God of War (right). He was half brother to Athena, also associated with war, and had an affair with Afrodite which we will not talk about here.
