Battlestar Galactica
Athena Goddess of Wisdom
and War, is usually depicted
dressed for battle, however she
rarely fought in battle, (when she did she
won which is way she is usually accompanied by Nike the goddess of Victory) and is better known for being a mediator, and was often called on to settle disputes between mortals and the Gods!
Also known as the Goddess of Crafts
she was also celebrated as the
patron of weavers, potters, sculptors
goldsmiths, musicians, and horsemen!
She supposedly invented the chariot., and she is also often accompanied by owls, which are a symbol of prudency. Owls also appear on the back of ancient Athenian coins.
The owl was also said to be a symbol of good fortune. If an owl flew over an assembled army, then it was said that victory would follow.
Dare we say it? Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, is possibly the best known of all the Greek goddesses. Aphrodite is said to have come from Kithera a Greek island, or some say she rose from the sea near Cyprus after Cronos castrated his father and threw his bits in the sea! (The Erinyes, or ‘Furies; where said to come from the drops of blood resulting from the castration).
Artemis, most often known as Goddess of the Hunt, is known as the Mistress of Animals and Protector of children, she could also
bring death with her arrows, and punish injustices against the Gods with deadly accuracy and
ferocity as Actaeon found out! Aloof and free-spirited, she wasoften found frolicking in the woods with the nymphs, unconstrained by husband or hearth, her independent nature was reinforced as by myth she
remained eternally a virgin!
Often represented as the Goddess of Agriculture, Demeter (left), is naturally important to us on Crete, where agriculture plays such a great part in our daily lives. Demeter is also the preserver of marriage and sacred law as well as the nourisher of youth and the earth!
