Christophorous Sklavenitis was born in Lefkada in 1926, from 1949 to 1956 he studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts. After graduating he was awarded a scholarship from the Greek State Scholarship Fund and  went to Italy where he attended post graduate studies for three years.

Since 1962 he has participated in many exhibitions in Greece, as well as in Geneva, Florence, Faenza, Montreal, Tokyo, and in Germany.

He has been awarded seven gold medals at the Thessaloniki International Fair and has been awarded the Gold Medal of the Italian Senate and the Saviour’s Silver Cross in 1996. His works are exhibited at the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, the Hellenic Ministry of  National Education, at various libraries and galleries throughout Greece, and in the American Museum of Art and Industry.

He is a member of the Hellenic Chamber of Plastic Arts, and has also taught sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts, and in the Materials Science and Technology Department of the Technical University of Crete. He has also taught ceramics technology and sculpture at the Hellenic Organisation of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises and the Greek Manpower Employment Organizsation.

From 1983 to 1987 he was Education Director as the Institute of Ceramic Art in Faenza.

Sklavenitis is also the authors of several books on Ceramics technology and Enamelling, including a book ‘Traditional Pottery of Western Crete’.

A connoisseur of contemporary art trends throughout Europe, he realised that there was an absence of bronze working in Greece, putting his talent and expertise to work he combined the handicraft of bronze working with contemporary art trends. Combining Ancient Greek spirit with today’s aesthetics he created a series of original sculptures inspired by Greek mythology. Ignoring folklore and traditional representations of Greek Mythology he has brought a daring and refreshing perspective to the Gods of Olympus, the ancient heroes, and animals of mythology.

The ‘style’ of his work is unusual but also attractive, and although the Greek art market has been reticent with it’s acceptance, the interest of foreign buyers demonstrates the value of these new works.

The imitation and copying of his works by other bronze worker demonstrates the influence he has on contemporary bronze working, although many of these imitations lack originality, inspiration, and artistic value, devoid of life and motion they have nothing of the Greek spirit of simplicity and finesse!
