Greece and Crete have, from ancient times, been associated with art, sculpture, and metalworking, so it will come as no surprise that we have chosen to use the Temple of Hephaestus and Athena Ergane, in the Ancient Agora in Athens, as our background picture, as Hephaestus was the God of Metalworking, and Athena Ergane the Goddess of Pottery and Handicrafts! Here on Crete, the Minoans were excellent potters as well as jewellery artists and many examples can be seen at the various sites around Crete and in the Archaeological Museum in the capital, Heraklion. Since Roman times the village of Thrapsano, around thirty minutes drive from Koutouloufari, has also been associated with pottery, in particular the large storage vessels known as ‘pithari’.
